In 1927, Calabrian immigrant and former coal miner Giuseppe Argiro baked bread around pepperoni sticks so miners could carry lunch underground — and invented West Virginia's official state food. This unassuming Fairmont storefront is where it happened, and WV Living readers still vote it the state's best. The Local Palate covers it as one of the South's iconic sandwiches.

Also worth knowing: the pepperoni roll follows you everywhere here — Julia's rolls, from a 1925 Fairmont recipe, stock nearly every grocery and convenience store in the county, so the gas-station version on the drive out is a legitimate last taste. And if the Fairmont run isn't in the cards, Bourbon Prime and Terra Café both put respected rolls on the table without leaving Morgantown.

Opened in 1950 as the Richwood Avenue Confectionery, it poured beer into oversized goblets blown at Morgantown Glass Works; when the Spina family took over in 1963 they leaned in, and the fishbowl was born. Pouring in Greenmont since 1944 — the oldest running bar in Morgantown — and self-described as the Cheers of the town, which it earns: a 4.8 rating across 400+ reviews, weekend live music that has hosted Tyler Childers, and a state-tourism-board writeup as the best-kept secret in the city. Despite the name, it's a dive tavern, not a beer hall.

Yes, it's the Pittsburgh institution — born in the Strip District in 1933 — operating deep in enemy territory, which is exactly the joke. It's also the biggest, most reliable pregame room within walking distance of the gates: open 11 AM, screens everywhere, kitchen till late, 0.75 mi from the stadium.

The 1911 building wears an Art Deco Carrara-glass storefront from its days as Comuntzis restaurant — 'Where Dad Took His Girl' a century ago. Mike 'Gibbie' Gainer, a WVU mechanical-engineering double-grad, won the space at a bankruptcy sale in 1987 and built the King of High Street: trivia, karaoke, open mics, weekend bands, kitchen till late, doors till 2:30 AM.

Morgantown pours deeper than any one lineup can hold. Also worth a stop: Chestnut Brew Works, the Greenmont taproom at 444 Brockway Avenue brewing the GABF-medal Halleck Pale Ale you'll see on draft all over town. Crockett's Lodge in Star City is the lodge bar alumni adopt senior year and never quit — open from 3 PM Saturdays, it's the postgame beer among people who've done this for forty years. Morgantown Brewing Company pours its own downtown at 1291 University Avenue with solid burgers and poutine. Town Hill Tavern is the cash-only First Ward hot-dog dive where a "Morgantown Martini" is a Busch Light, open till 2 AM. And Almost Heaven Bar & Grill brings corn hole and pool to High Street — downtown, not stadium-side, whatever some national gameday guides claim.

123 Pleasant Street (Live Music Underground — 123 Pleasant St)
Built in 1891 as the city's first major rowhouse block, devoted to the musical underground since 1982 — when the legendary Marsha Ferber ran it as the Underground Railroad, whose Harriet Tubman mural still watches the room. Condemned, saved, and reborn in 1998 under its street address, it now runs local-to-national bands — punk to bluegrass to hip-hop — across two stages and two bars with their own personalities, plus open mics and art shows. Gates Open

What It Is
Grills, cornhole, and multi-generational Mountaineer encampments as far as you can see. Visiting fans report the friendliest adoption rate in the Big 12 — show up in your colors and you'll be handed a plate.
How It Works
Stadium-side lots are largely permit parking, but walking the scene is open to everyone — base downtown or in Evansdale, walk or shuttle in, and wander. If you're driving, arrive early and expect to park in satellite lots; the stadium sits between a hospital complex and campus, and the roads pinch.
What to Expect
Gold and blue in every direction, the smell of a thousand grills, and a crowd that treats a stranger in the wrong colors as a guest, not a target. September is warm and humid; November brings real cold to these hills.

The Mountaineer Mantrip
About 2 hours 20 minutes before kickoff, the team walks in past fans along Medical Center Drive and Don Nehlen Drive — and every player touches a 350-pound block of coal from the Upper Big Branch mine before entering. A blue-collar rite unlike anything else in the sport.
The Hospital Wave
Immediately after kickoff's first quarter — wait for it — players and 60,000 fans turn and wave to the kids watching from the WVU Medicine Children's Hospital windows above the stadium. Bring a tissue; nobody's ready the first time.
Take Me Home, Country Roads
John Denver landed on this field by helicopter to open the stadium in 1980, sang it, and left. After every win, the players stay on the field and lead the whole stadium through it. Win or lose, stay for the song — after a win it is, verifiably, the best tradition in college football.
The Musket
The Mountaineer mascot fires a real musket after every score. It's loud. Kids who startle easily want ear protection; everyone else learns to love it by the second quarter.
